What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine, rather than targeting individual symptoms, focuses on the optimal functioning of the entire body and its organs. It addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach in partnership with understanding the conditions and history in which the disease manifested. Genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors all have a direct influence of long-term health and chronic health issues.

How Do You Approach Functional Medicine?

At Functional Skin Solutions, we use a functional medicine lab based health approach focused on addressing five common conditions – skin issues, fatigue, depression, female hormone and digestive problems – through restoring the 3 main body systems: hormones, digestion and detoxification.

Our lab-based natural health protocol tests and identifies the dysfunction of the 3 core main body systems. Typically these 3 main systems have become compromised long BEFORE the symptoms appeared. The lab tests are used to determine the required natural support needed rebalance your body back to its normal state.

How long does it take to get results?

Results vary by each person. Some people feel dramatic improvement within the first month, others may take a bit longer. Our standard programs are for a minimum of 6 months. Remember, your body didn’t fail overnight. Years of stress and illness takes its toll and it takes a proper amount of time to restore. On average it takes one month of repair for each year you’ve suffered from a specific problem.

How long are the consultations?

Initial new patient consultations are 45-60 minutes.
Follow up lab result consultations can be scheduled for 30 min. (if you have 1 tests), 45 min. (if you have 2 tests), or 1 hour (if you have 3-4 tests).
Existing client follow up consultations can be scheduled for 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes.

How long are the programs that Functional Skin Solutions recommends?

Initial programs range anywhere from 3-6 months depending on the degree of your health condition

Can I purchase supplements other than from Functional Skin Solutions?

Functional Skin Solutions recommends supplements from high quality and reputable manufacturers that can only be purchased with a practitioner’s recommendation. We use Fullscript to fulfill supplement suggestions.

The Wellness plan that we create has specific dosages based on the exact ingredients in that specific supplement. If you want to do your own research on different supplements, we welcome you to do so but we do not provide any other recommendations nor advise on other specific blends or brands. If you purchase other supplements from other manufacturers, please research carefully. Not all ingredients are equal, and there is not a guaranteed quality when you purchase supplements elsewhere, especially on Amazon.


What Are The Restrictions On Virtual Doctor's Visits?

There are very few. We use a HIPPAA secure video platform or the phone to conduct telehealth consultations.

Email Etiquette

Patients have unlimited email contact with Functional Skin Solutions. However, if an email question or request is deemed to be too complicated or involved for a response via email we may, at our discretion, require that the member schedule a phone or telehealth  visit instead of responding via email.

Scheduling & billing; Cancellations

What is the best way to schedule an appointment?

All of our appointments are done via phone or secure video. The fastest and easiest way to schedule an appointment is t use our online scheduler (LINK) or call (phone#)

What are the fees for a consultation?

Fees vary based on type of consultation and time. Please contact our office for more information on fees.

How much do the programs cost after the lab work?

Depending on the protocol created by Holly Thompson, the estimated total cost on average is $200-$400 and depends on the length of the program.

What is the average cost I will incur for my initial new patient consult plus test kits?

It depends on how many test kits are recommended (typically 1-4) but we always recommend that if there are any budgetary concerns, clients start with their first test.

Does my new client consultation fee include follow ups, test kits and supplements?

The new client consultation is an assessment of your health and recommendations on what tests are required to understand the state of your body systems. The new client consultation fee does not include any follow ups, test kits or supplements. It does include extensive wellness resources including videos, books and handouts.

How does Holly Thompson bill her clients?

Payment is due at time of consultation. If paying by credit card, the card number is required to be on file with our office prior to the consultation. Checks are accepted if received prior to the consult.

Do you take insurance?

We do not bill insurance companies; it is up to each individual to determine whether their insurance plan provides coverage for consultations, supplements and lab tests.

If not, what is the office able to provide that can help with getting reimbursements for consultations and/or test kits?

On request, we will provide a superbill to you that lists CPT and diagnosis codes that you may submit to your insurance company. Our superbills provide the codes for consultations and lab tests. Most insurance companies will not reimburse for supplements. Please note that we cannot guarantee reimbursement.

Does she offer any discount if more than one family member will be signing up to become a client?

There are no family discounts; however, for couples we can offer joint consultations of 1 hour to cover both people. For children of existing clients the initial consultation fees are waived. Please contact the office for more details.

What if I need to reschedule?

Please let us know as soon as possible.

There is a 24-hour cancellation policy for all appointments with an Functional Skin Solutions. Canceling within 24-hours will result in a $50 charge to the credit card on file.

No-shows: If you do not show up to a phone, video/telemedicine  appointment without notifying us either via email or by changing the appointment using the online scheduling tool on the patient portal, you will be charged $100 to the card on file.


How many labs are required per person?

The number of labs recommended will depend on your individual situation including the number of issues you struggle with and the length of time you have been experiencing them, but the range is 1-4 lab tests.

Do I have to take all the tests recommended at once?

It works best if can do all the labs at once to get a “big picture” view of your health, But if there are budgetary constraints, we can do one test at a time.

How long does it take to get the lab results?

The results of your lab test(s) will be sent to Functional Skin Solutions  2 to 4 weeks after mailing your specimens to the lab. After evaluation we will contact you to schedule a follow up appointment to review your results with Holly Thompson and she will recommend a wellness protocol.

Can I order my own test kits through the laboratories or can my regular doctor order the lab tests for me?

Our authorized laboratories are only able to sell test kits to licensed practitioners. Holly Thompson uses specific lab tests from small lab companies that exclusively offer functional medicine tests. Larger national labs and local hospital based labs are not helpful for these types of highly specialized tests.

What laboratories does Functional Skin Solutions use? And why?

We’ve learned over many years that the accuracy of your lab findings and the quality of the professionals performing the lab tests is the key to you uncovering what’s going on. Quality is not equal across all lab companies. Many times we see “normal” test results from regular lab companies and our lab tests find many “functional” problems. The lab companies used for Functional Skin Solutions clients have the highest testing standards and the most consistent lab results year after year. These are not replacements for regular medical tests, these tests are only used to detect “functional” issues rather than medical problems and aren’t meant to diagnose or recommend protocols for diseases. We are attempting to detect problems with the functioning of organ systems prior to the onset of a disease.

What types of lab tests are required?

Depending on the type of test, the samples required are saliva, urine or stool. All tests are completed by the client through easy test kits that are self-administered in the comfort of your own home. No blood tests will be interpreted.


How often should I retest?

While retesting isn’t required, it is recommended that a client retest at the 6 month mark to measure improvement and adjust protocols if needed. Once a client has achieved their desired health results, we recommend annual testing to ensure your body systems continue functioning at their best.

We Are Not A Conventional Primary Care Physician

Functional Skin Solutions is not a physician or primary care provider. To work with Functional Skin Solutions and Holly Thompson, we require that you have a physician or primary care provider.

It is important to note the following:

1. We do not fulfill an insurance company’s requirement for an in network provider as we are not in-network with any insurance plan.

2. We do not have a 24-hour answering service and do not take calls on weekends. If you have a medical emergency you would need to visit an ER or urgent care center, or call 911.

We Do Not Bill Insurance Companies

The cost of any services provided by Functional Skin Solutions will be billed to you directly.

Non-Functional Skin Solutions medical expenses such as lab tests and supplements may be covered by a member’s health insurance plan per that plan’s rules.

Functional Skin Solutions will not submit a medical claim to insurance on your behalf. We cannot assist you with claim resolution for our services.

We will provide you with a detailed billing summary that you may submit to your insurance for reimbursement. There may be lab tests that are not covered depending on your plan’s rules.

About Lab Tests
  • Some lab tests recommended by Functional Skin Solutions will be billed directly to your insurance by the lab.
  • Some lab tests we offer as part of our functional medicine testing program may not be covered by insurance and in these cases you will be charged a fee for a particular test by the lab.
  • The specific tests recommended will be personalized to you based on your initial evaluation with Functional Skin Solutions and may include saliva, urine or stool testing.
  • We will make every effort to make you fully aware of any additional lab fees that may be incurred and to give you the opportunity to choose which lab tests you feel comfortable paying for.
  • You are under no obligation to purchase any specialty testing.
  • Should any lab results indicate you may need further testing you will be directed to continue your care with your primary care physician or a relevant specialist, or, should you choose, you may continue to work with Functional Skin Solutions as well.
  • At home test kits: If a lab test kit is mailed to you by Functional Skin Solutions, you will be charged the day the kit is mailed.
